Meet Meagan of Baby Swank

In the coming weeks I’ll be featuring several other Etsy artisans on my blog. Most are fellow members of my Etsy Teams: Etsy for Animals, CraftAnon, Etsy Moms and the Georgia Etsy Team. Some are random Etsy sellers who I stalk whose work I love and admire. All of them are unique and have interesting stories to tell. I hope you enjoy getting to know them!

Meagan is a fellow member of the Etsy Moms Team who makes adorable bibs and cloth diaper covers.

Tell us a bit about yourself:
My name is Meagan, and I’m a 26 year old stay-at-home-mom with two children at the moment, hopefully more as time goes on. I love my husband and my family. They are my best friends. They’re very encouraging in all I do! I love anything creative and crafty. I have all sorts of “crafting” projects going on all the time. I really enjoy taking nothing and making something. There’s something so fulfilling in that for me. I started my artistic journey with scrapbooking, from there sewing, then to painting, pottery, soapmaking, jewelry making, cake decorating, etc. Like I said, I like to do a little bit of everything…well, not exactly everything. There are so many more things I’d like to learn to do. I love to make things that are fun, pretty, and different. Hopefully you will like my items as much as I do, and you’ll share them with others!

How did you come up with your shop name?
Well, it took a while! All the others I liked were already taken! Etsy has lots of sellers! Anyway, I went online to a Thesaurus and just started typing in words that described what I would be selling and I came up with Baby Swank!

When did you start sewing?
I learned to sew when I was a teenager. I had some friends who’s mom had gone to school for fashion design back in the day, and they were always making clothes together which I thought was the coolest thing. I mean, I didn’t know anyone that made their own clothes. So, when we would hang out we’d end up sewing skirts together, and their mom would help and teach us along the way. Overtime, I just started picking things up and sewing them. Once you’ve got the basics, it pretty much trial and error. I’ve done my fair share of ripping out seams! I laugh every time I look back at those skirts now. I’m grateful for progress!

What made you want to start selling your creations?
Well I guess because it was something I’d never seen anywhere else before, and I thought it was a fabulous idea…my Washcloth Bibs that is! I loved them, and wanted a bunch for my kids. I mean you can never have too many of them, and I figured there were lots of parents out there just like me who would appreciate a bib made with a washcloth. From there I just keep adding cute things that I like, and hopefully others do to!

Please describe your creative process?
For my bibs, I just look at washcloths that have fun colors or are seasonal and match them up with cute fabric. I then use a bib pattern for the fabric, add my washcloth, sew in the pocket, put either velcro or snaps on, and attach my shop tag. Voila…we have a cute bib! Same goes for the flannel baby wipes and the cloth diaper covers. I browse around the fabric store looking for prints that catch my eye. As far as my chickies are concerned, I wanted to make a plush animal that reflected my shop, and since chicks are in my banner and avatar image, my “chickies” were born. I match up scrap fabric that works well together, free hand the pattern and sew away. I add embellishments that I think will make him cute, and there he is!

What inspires you?
First off, my kids. Everything I make and sell, I use on them. Secondly, anything reusable, cute, money saving, or fashionable. I like doing some things the “green”, healthy, natural, eco-friendly, whatever you want to call it way, but I want it to be fun and look nice!

How do you promote your work?
This is the hard part. You don’t want to shove things down people’s throats, so I’m learning a lot especially about balance. So right now I use my blog, Facebook, and a little bit of Twitter. I’m still learning that one. I post in Etsy forums and participate in Labs. I’m also a member of the EtsyMom team and the SAHMsofEtsy team.

Are your items custom made or premade?
Both. Everything is premade except for my cloth diaper covers. They are custom order only, but any of my products can be a custom order. If you’re looking for something in particular that I don’t offer in my shop it never hurts to convo me and ask. I’ll do what I can to make it work!

Tell us two of your short term goals and one long term goal?
Well with the holidays approaching one short term goal would be to make at least 20 sales during that time, and another short term goal would be to get everything together for my new product line coming out in January 2011 – All Natural Baby Products. As far as a long-term goal goes, I’d like to be averaging at least one sale a day a year from now.

Walk us through a typical day in your life?
The boys and I wake up around 8 AM and have breakfast. I check emails, convos, FB, blog, all that stuff and relist anything that has sold. Around 9:30 we walk down to see Daddy at work (family business). Then my youngest goes down for a nap at 10:00. That gives me and the oldest time to clean a bit, play a bit, do some school work, etc. Little bro gets up at 11:30 and we fix lunch. Daddy gets home for lunch at 12:00. By 1:00 both kiddo’s go down for a nap, and I work on listing new items, sewing things, posting on my blog, or other projects I’ve got going on. The kids wake up around 3:00-3:30. We play till Dad gets home at 4:00. From then on our day is different depending on the day of the week. We either hang out at home with dad, have dinner around 5:30-6:00 and play till time for bed at 8:30-9:00, or we go out of town for shopping, visit friends or family, something else along those lines. On those days, we get home in time to get the boys in bed. Then the hubs and I relax and watch tv. Sometimes I get more Baby Swank stuff done. Then we go to bed! Everyday is different!

What is your favorite item in your shop at the moment?
My cloth diaper cover! It’s my newest item, and so cute. I love that it’s personalized. It makes a great gift!
