Oh Hai Thar!

So I was laying in bed with my 13 month old as he fell asleep pondering (as one does) and it hit me. Well, not literally of course. Actually, my internal dialogue went something like this: “Dentist appointment tomorrow means I should probably shower tonight or in the morning. I should really journal about the business and how I’m struggling with various things. Hey, I have that totally neglected blog for Bewhiskered. HEY I KNOW. I’ll write about all the things I’m going through as a newbie business owner. That might be fun.”

So there ya go. I guess I should start at the beginning so if that sort of recap thing bores you to tears you can skip to the end now.

I worked for 10 years as a marketing professional. Then I got pregnant. I’d always wanted to be a stay at home Mom. But I also love making things. And writing. But it was pretty obvious early on that writing was going to be more difficult for me than making things. I just couldn’t get the time and space I needed to get into another world in my head which is what I need to do in order to write. Making things it was!

And boy, did I make things. They started to pile up. So I figured I could open an Etsy store and make a little extra spending money. The initial concept behind Bewhiskered was to make things for pets. It just never clicked. I have a ton of books on making pet toys and even some materials for things like catfish shaped kitty beds, but nothing ever got made. Then I finished my son’s cloth diaper stash and had a ton of material left over, so I made some extra cloth diapers and opened shop. That didn’t click either. I sold a few, but I wasn’t really into making them and the competition was fierce.

They were pretty cute though.

Third time’s the charm, right? I had this tiger rug my Mom latch hooked for me as a baby. With Jake’s six month pictures getting close, I decided I wanted to recreate that rug. I looked for a latch hook kit, and no dice. So I picked up this great book of stuffed animal patterns, enlarged the pattern for a tiger’s head about 300% and whipped up a vaguely tiger skin shaped body for it.

It was terrible. But it looks okay in his pictures.

You'll notice the photographer wisely cropped out the head.

Other Mom friends of mine were talking up these tag blankets so I looked up a few on Etsy. I didn’t like them. They were all small, for one thing. And boring. Cue the lightbulb. I chopped the head off that first tiger rug and used the body material to make the first Ruggle. It belongs to Jake. It’s pretty bad. Thankfully they got better.

So anyway, all of that is to say the process that formed this business was a slow one. It’s actually only been very recently that I started calling it a business. Before I’d say that I sold things online or I made these blankets or some variation of the sort. It was more a hobby. An outlet for my creativity and a way to make a little extra money that was flexible enough to fit into my Mommy life.

The first decision I faced was whether to keep it more of a hobby, or transition to a proper business. I was making only enough money to pay for more supplies really, but I got a big order that let me buy annual passes to the Georgia Aquarium. That was actually really cool. That had me thinking that Bewhiskered could fund other cool things for me and my boys. So now it’s a business. Which means it has to be profitable. And I have to keep good records to ensure that it’s profitable. And there’s all these licenses and taxes and stuff that have to be dealt with.

My record keeping is a dollar spot plastic accordion folder from Target with the sections marked by quarter. I put any receipts for things I don’t buy with my Paypal card in there. I use Outright.com to keep track of everything else, and manually enter the non-Paypal receipts about twice a year. I have an Excel spreadsheet for figuring out my product cost. I made it up so I’m pretty sure it’s lacking in a hundred different ways, but it works. I use free templates for just about everything and make up the rest myself.

I’m hoping 2012 will be the year I turn an actual profit. I’m going to end this post here, since it’s late and my kids still haven’t adjusted to daylight savings time which means I’ll be up at the ass crack of dawn.

I’ve got loads of topics for future posts, and I’m going to do my damndest to put them up on a regular basis. What do you want to know? I’ll be happy to answer with the perspective of a newly minted (bumbling through it) business person.

Meet Meagan of Baby Swank

In the coming weeks I’ll be featuring several other Etsy artisans on my blog. Most are fellow members of my Etsy Teams: Etsy for Animals, CraftAnon, Etsy Moms and the Georgia Etsy Team. Some are random Etsy sellers who I stalk whose work I love and admire. All of them are unique and have interesting stories to tell. I hope you enjoy getting to know them!

Meagan is a fellow member of the Etsy Moms Team who makes adorable bibs and cloth diaper covers.

Tell us a bit about yourself:
My name is Meagan, and I’m a 26 year old stay-at-home-mom with two children at the moment, hopefully more as time goes on. I love my husband and my family. They are my best friends. They’re very encouraging in all I do! I love anything creative and crafty. I have all sorts of “crafting” projects going on all the time. I really enjoy taking nothing and making something. There’s something so fulfilling in that for me. I started my artistic journey with scrapbooking, from there sewing, then to painting, pottery, soapmaking, jewelry making, cake decorating, etc. Like I said, I like to do a little bit of everything…well, not exactly everything. There are so many more things I’d like to learn to do. I love to make things that are fun, pretty, and different. Hopefully you will like my items as much as I do, and you’ll share them with others!

How did you come up with your shop name?
Well, it took a while! All the others I liked were already taken! Etsy has lots of sellers! Anyway, I went online to a Thesaurus and just started typing in words that described what I would be selling and I came up with Baby Swank!

When did you start sewing?
I learned to sew when I was a teenager. I had some friends who’s mom had gone to school for fashion design back in the day, and they were always making clothes together which I thought was the coolest thing. I mean, I didn’t know anyone that made their own clothes. So, when we would hang out we’d end up sewing skirts together, and their mom would help and teach us along the way. Overtime, I just started picking things up and sewing them. Once you’ve got the basics, it pretty much trial and error. I’ve done my fair share of ripping out seams! I laugh every time I look back at those skirts now. I’m grateful for progress!

What made you want to start selling your creations?
Well I guess because it was something I’d never seen anywhere else before, and I thought it was a fabulous idea…my Washcloth Bibs that is! I loved them, and wanted a bunch for my kids. I mean you can never have too many of them, and I figured there were lots of parents out there just like me who would appreciate a bib made with a washcloth. From there I just keep adding cute things that I like, and hopefully others do to!

Please describe your creative process?
For my bibs, I just look at washcloths that have fun colors or are seasonal and match them up with cute fabric. I then use a bib pattern for the fabric, add my washcloth, sew in the pocket, put either velcro or snaps on, and attach my shop tag. Voila…we have a cute bib! Same goes for the flannel baby wipes and the cloth diaper covers. I browse around the fabric store looking for prints that catch my eye. As far as my chickies are concerned, I wanted to make a plush animal that reflected my shop, and since chicks are in my banner and avatar image, my “chickies” were born. I match up scrap fabric that works well together, free hand the pattern and sew away. I add embellishments that I think will make him cute, and there he is!

What inspires you?
First off, my kids. Everything I make and sell, I use on them. Secondly, anything reusable, cute, money saving, or fashionable. I like doing some things the “green”, healthy, natural, eco-friendly, whatever you want to call it way, but I want it to be fun and look nice!

How do you promote your work?
This is the hard part. You don’t want to shove things down people’s throats, so I’m learning a lot especially about balance. So right now I use my blog, Facebook, and a little bit of Twitter. I’m still learning that one. I post in Etsy forums and participate in Labs. I’m also a member of the EtsyMom team and the SAHMsofEtsy team.

Are your items custom made or premade?
Both. Everything is premade except for my cloth diaper covers. They are custom order only, but any of my products can be a custom order. If you’re looking for something in particular that I don’t offer in my shop it never hurts to convo me and ask. I’ll do what I can to make it work!

Tell us two of your short term goals and one long term goal?
Well with the holidays approaching one short term goal would be to make at least 20 sales during that time, and another short term goal would be to get everything together for my new product line coming out in January 2011 – All Natural Baby Products. As far as a long-term goal goes, I’d like to be averaging at least one sale a day a year from now.

Walk us through a typical day in your life?
The boys and I wake up around 8 AM and have breakfast. I check emails, convos, FB, blog, all that stuff and relist anything that has sold. Around 9:30 we walk down to see Daddy at work (family business). Then my youngest goes down for a nap at 10:00. That gives me and the oldest time to clean a bit, play a bit, do some school work, etc. Little bro gets up at 11:30 and we fix lunch. Daddy gets home for lunch at 12:00. By 1:00 both kiddo’s go down for a nap, and I work on listing new items, sewing things, posting on my blog, or other projects I’ve got going on. The kids wake up around 3:00-3:30. We play till Dad gets home at 4:00. From then on our day is different depending on the day of the week. We either hang out at home with dad, have dinner around 5:30-6:00 and play till time for bed at 8:30-9:00, or we go out of town for shopping, visit friends or family, something else along those lines. On those days, we get home in time to get the boys in bed. Then the hubs and I relax and watch tv. Sometimes I get more Baby Swank stuff done. Then we go to bed! Everyday is different!

What is your favorite item in your shop at the moment?
My cloth diaper cover! It’s my newest item, and so cute. I love that it’s personalized. It makes a great gift!
